Gobos in the Photo Studio: What They Are and Why They’re Worth It
Gobos in the Photo Studio: What They Are and Why They’re Worth It
A gobo is a small, patterned aluminum disc that is inserted into a compatible light source. The light source projects the gobo’s pattern onto the background or subject—creating striking light patterns that instantly transform a studio shot. Crosses, star patterns, foliage, venetian blind slats, or flames: depending on the gobo, a completely different visual atmosphere is created.
The key advantage over post-processing lies in its immediacy. What you see in the studio is exactly what ends up in the image. This saves time in post-production and gives you immediate visual control over the background effect during the shoot.
Which Godox products are Gobo-compatible?
Not every Godox light source supports the use of gobos. The four Godox gobo sets—Gobo Set 1, 2, 3, and 4—are intended exclusively for specific Godox products.
The following models are currently compatible:
- Godox BLPÂ
- Godox BFP
- Godox MLP26K
- Godox MLP36KÂ
- Godox SA-P1
If you use one of these devices, you can use all four gobo sets directly. All sets use gobos with a uniform diameter of 66 mm and are made of aluminum.
Important: The gobos are conditionally suitable for other light sources not listed here. They are not intended for use in incompatible devices.
Which Gobo Set is right for which shoot?
The four sets do not differ in size or material, but only in the patterns they contain. Depending on the mood of the image and the subject, you can choose the appropriate set:
Godox Gobo Set 1 contains stars, fire, flames, the moon, and two breakup patterns. It is suitable for dramatic, intense moods.
Godox Gobo Set 2 includes hearts, a tree, two leaf motifs, a U-shaped star, and another pattern. It’s perfect for warm, natural, or romantic shots.
Godox Gobo Set 3 includes stars, stripes, tree leaves, irises, sunbeams, and a starry night. It offers the widest range of themes and combines geometric and organic shapes.
Godox Gobo Set 4 includes window and venetian blind patterns. It is the top choice for realistic room atmospheres and architectural lighting effects.
All four sets can be combined. Since the gobos have the same format and support the same products, you can switch flexibly between patterns during a shoot./p h2What to keep in mind when using themGobos project light—which means that the distance, angle, and focus of the light source directly influence the sharpness and size of the projected pattern. A greater distance between the gobo and the background creates a softer, larger pattern. A shorter distance results in a sharper, more compact image. It’s worth experimenting.
Additionally: The gobos are precision-machined aluminum parts. They should be stored in a clean, dry place to ensure they remain functional over time.
Conclusion
Anyone working with one of the compatible Godox products can use all four gobo sets right away. The choice of the right set depends solely on the desired visual mood. With all four sets combined, you have a versatile library of 24 different light patterns at your disposal in the studio—for effective background design without post-processing.
