How to Transport Filters Properly
A scratch on the coating is irreparable, and the coating is exactly what you’re paying for when you buy a filter. How a filter is transported therefore determines how long it will remain in good condition.
Bags for Round Filters
Filter bags with individual compartments hold multiple screw-on filters, each in its own slot, without glass-to-glass contact. They’re available for four to ten filters and for diameters up to 82, 95, or 112 mm. The practical advantage over the included individual cases: You can see at a glance what you have with you and find the right filter without having to open four little cases. If you’re traveling with a polarizing filter and two ND filter strengths, this saves you noticeable time on location.
Pouches and boxes for slip-in filters
Rectangular filters are more delicate than round filters because their edges are exposed. Transport boxes and padded pouches are available in sizes suitable for 100×100, 100×150, and 150×170 mm. A carbon fiber protective plate also fits in front of the filters in the holder when the entire system remains mounted and is transported in a backpack.
Replacement Parts
For Haida holders, there are filter inserts available to expand capacity, increasing the number of filters that can be used simultaneously, as well as replacement parts for common wear points. This is worth the investment, as the holder itself lasts a long time, while inserts and gaskets are the parts that suffer the most during field use.
Practical Tips
Clean the filters after use near water; splashes dry into lime scale stains that are difficult to remove later. A bellows and a microfiber cloth should therefore be kept in the same bag; for more information, see Protection and Care.
