Finding the Right Clip-On Flash
A clip-on flash fits into your camera’s hot shoe and provides light exactly when you need it. Compared to the built-in flash, you get significantly more power, a shorter recharge time, and—most importantly—the ability to swivel and tilt the flash head. That’s exactly the key point: If you bounce the flash off the ceiling instead of aiming it directly at the subject’s face, you’ll get soft, natural light instead of harsh shadows.
Is the flash compatible with your camera?
Clip-on flashes are built for specific camera systems. The contacts in the hot shoe differ between Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, and Panasonic. Therefore, when purchasing, make sure to choose the correct version for your camera mount—usually identified by an abbreviation in the product name, such as C for Canon, N for Nikon, S for Sony, or F for Fujifilm. Purely manual flashes without data transmission, on the other hand, work with almost any camera that has a standard hot shoe.
TTL, HSS, and Manual Mode
In TTL mode, the camera measures the light through the lens and automatically adjusts the flash output. This is handy when you need to work quickly and the lighting conditions are constantly changing, such as at a wedding or an event. In manual mode, you set the power yourself, usually in steps ranging from full power down to a fraction of that. This ensures the result remains exactly the same from shot to shot, which is a major advantage in the studio and for product photography.
HSS stands for High Speed Sync and removes the limitation on the flash sync speed. Without HSS, depending on your camera, you’re limited to around 1/200 s. If you want to shoot with a wide aperture in sunlight and keep the background blurred, you’ll need faster shutter speeds—and therefore HSS. For outdoor portraits, this feature is practically indispensable.
Off-Camera Flash with a Radio Trigger
Flash photography gets really interesting as soon as the flash leaves the camera. A radio trigger mounted on the hot shoe controls one or more flashes in the room, giving you complete freedom to determine the direction and character of the light. Godox uses its unified X-System for this, which controls everything from small clip-on flashes to large battery-powered flashes using the same trigger. You can conveniently adjust the power and mode on the transmitter without having to walk over to the flash.
Clip-on flash or battery-powered flash?
A hot-shoe flash is compact, runs on batteries or a small rechargeable battery, and fits in any camera bag. It’s the obvious choice for on-the-go shooting, photojournalism, and fill-in flashes. A battery-powered flash like the AD series offers significantly more power and comes with a removable battery, but it’s designed to be mounted on a light stand rather than directly on the camera. As soon as you want to shoot into the sun or use large light modifiers, there’s no getting around a battery-powered flash.
Flash or continuous light?
Both have their place. Flash delivers a lot of energy in a split second, freezes motion, and cuts through even bright ambient light. Continuous light lets you see the result before you take the shot and is the only practical option for video. If you mainly take photos and are lighting people or products, you’re generally better off with a flash.
Shaping Light
The flash alone is just the light source; the light modifier determines the character of the light. A small softbox mounted on the clip-on flash makes the light noticeably softer; a reflector directs it precisely; honeycomb grids concentrate the beam; and color gels add accents to the background.
