You're shooting a flower for a focus stack: mount the camera on the rail, set the frame, then advance the knob by an even step between frames. Shot after shot the focus plane travels through the subject, and afterwards you merge the images in software into one frame that is sharp front to back.

What you should know before you order

Built for lighter gear

The rail is designed for compacts, mirrorless bodies and smaller DSLRs with light macro or prime lenses. With a heavy body-and-long-lens combination the movement can get stiffer – for studio macro with lighter kit it's right at home.

It connects, but doesn't replace a tripod

You still need a stable tripod with a 1/4-inch mount. The rail sits in between; a rock-steady base is essential for clean focus stacking.

Manual movement

The axes are moved by hand via the geared knobs – this is not a motorised or automatic rail. Precise, but you turn the knobs yourself.
