Whether it’s a portrait, product shot, or content for your own business: The background turns any photo into a professional image. It draws attention to the subject, ensures clean cutouts, and gives your shots a consistent look. However, there are many options to choose from—roll or wall system, paper or fabric, what size? This guide will help you make the right decision in just a few minutes.

Before you even think about the material, you need to decide on a system—that is, the way the background is hung and changed.

Background Roll & Roll System

The studio standard: One or more rolls hang from a mount on the wall or on a tripod system and are pulled down as needed. Ideal if you want to switch between multiple colors quickly. The most convenient solution for a permanent studio.

Foldable Background / Pop-up

A foldable ring covered in fabric, often two-toned (e.g., black/white). Sets up in seconds, packs down small—perfect for on the go, small spaces, or on-location shoots.

Mounting a Background on the Wall

If you’re shooting in the same location long-term, mount the system permanently to the wall or ceiling. This saves floor space and ensures it’s always ready to use.

Paper, fabric, or vinyl? A comparison of materials

Background paper – the classic choice

Background paper is completely matte, has an even color, and is affordable. You can simply cut off any soiled or creased sections. Less suitable if people frequently walk over it.

Fabric / Molton – matte and travel-friendly

Fabric is matte, reflects very little light, and can be folded up—making it travel-friendly and durable. Molton is a particularly deep black. Downside: It tends to wrinkle, so you’ll need to smooth out the creases with a steamer.

Vinyl / PVC – washable and durable

Vinyl is washable, tear-resistant, and ideal for situations where it gets dirty—such as in food or product photography. It’s more durable than paper, but depending on the surface, it can be slightly reflective.

What size & color do I need?

For portraits (head to hips), a width of about 1.35 m is usually sufficient. For full-body or group shots, you should opt for 2.7 m to ensure the floor is also covered. When it comes to colors, white (bright, clean look, easy to cut out), black (dramatic, elegant), and a neutral gray (the versatile all-rounder) are the most commonly used basics.

Backgrounds for product photography

For small products, you don’t need a large studio: A light tent (photo tent) with a built-in, interchangeable background and even lighting delivers clean, low-shadow shots—ideal for online store images. For larger objects, a vinyl or paper background with a gentle transition to the floor (bevel) works best.
