You want to get closer to insects, flowers or jewellery, but a dedicated macro lens is not in the budget right now? The Godox MCL-250 mounts on the front of the lens you already own and shortens its minimum focusing distance considerably. It turns your kit zoom or telephoto into a close-up tool without changing lenses.
- Macro conversion lens with 2.5x magnification
- For lenses with 49 to 67mm filter threads
- Glass optic
- Your lens keeps autofocus and aperture control
Get closer with the lens you already own
Turn your kit zoom into a macro tool
Every lens has a minimum focusing distance, and you usually hit it just as the subject gets interesting. The MCL-250 moves that limit forward: you get closer to the subject and render it correspondingly larger. The principle is the same as with the Raynox conversion lenses that have been popular for years.
One lens for several lenses
The MCL-250 fits lenses with filter threads from 49 to 67mm. That covers most kit zooms, primes and compact telephoto zooms, so you do not need a separate close-up lens for each of them.
Autofocus, aperture and light stay as they are
Unlike extension tubes, the conversion lens sits in front of the lens rather than between camera and lens. The electrical contacts are untouched, so autofocus and aperture control keep working. You also lose practically no light, which is not the case with extension tubes as extension increases.
In the bag instead of at home
A macro lens often stays at home because it takes up space and adds weight. The conversion lens fits into any pocket of your camera bag and is there when a beetle crosses your path.
What this looks like in practice
In a meadow with a telephoto zoom
You are out with your telephoto zoom and spot a wild bee on a flower. Mount the conversion lens, zoom to the long end and stop down to f/11 or f/16. Set rough focus by distance, slowly moving back and forth, and let autofocus do the rest. Once the bee is gone, take the lens off and carry on shooting as normal.
What you should know before ordering
How large you can go depends on your lens
The 2.5x figure is the manufacturer's rating. What you actually get is determined by the focal length of your lens: the longer the focal length, the stronger the magnification. On a telephoto the effect is pronounced, on a short prime it is more modest.
With the lens attached, only close range works
As long as the conversion lens is on, you cannot focus to infinity. Only a narrow zone a few centimetres to decimetres in front of the lens will be sharp. For normal photography you have to take the MCL-250 off again.
Depth of field is razor thin
At close range, depth of field shrinks to a few millimetres. You need to stop down, and then light runs short quickly. A macro light or flash helps more than raising ISO. For tripod work, a focusing rail makes precise focusing much easier.
No front filter thread
You cannot screw another filter in front of the MCL-250. At short focal lengths, especially on full frame, the corners of the image may also darken. It works best at the long end of your zoom.
