What the 1/4 density means

Black Mist filters come in several strengths. 1/4 is in the middle: You can clearly see the effect on highlights and skin, but the image doesn’t veer into a soft-focus look. For most shots, this is the strength you’ll still be using even after the tenth time.

Why “Black” Mist

The diffusion here comes from dark particles rather than light ones. This lets highlights bloom without the shadows becoming milky and washed out. A simple soft-focus filter casts a veil over the entire image; here, black stays black, and only the bright areas get their halo.

Magnetic attachment

You hold the camera in one hand and attach the filter with the other. No threads, no wobbling. The filter covers both lenses, so you can zoom in closer with the telephoto lens without having to switch anything out.

Portrait

Skin textures become smoother without the eyes and edges losing sharpness. That’s the difference between a face that looks friendly and one that reveals every imperfection, because a 1-inch sensor captures them all.

Evening in the City

Streetlights, neon signs, and car headlights take on a soft halo instead of a hard edge. This is the look you see in movies and that’s difficult to recreate in post-processing.

Backlighting

When the sun is low and shining directly into the lens, the filter takes the edge off the harsh contrast. The transition from light to dark becomes smoother, rather than abruptly changing at a sharp line.

What You Should Know Before You Order

The effect cannot be undone

What you shoot with a soft filter stays soft. You can partially restore sharpness and contrast in post-processing, but you can’t completely remove the look. For a shot you only have once, if in doubt, shoot without the filter first.

It deliberately reduces sharpness

The Luna Ultra features Leica optics and shoots in 8K. This filter intentionally counteracts some of that. If you bought the camera for maximum detail—such as for product shots or landscapes with fine textures—leave the filter in the box. It shines for portraits and night shots, but not for spec sheet photos.

Fits only the Luna Ultra
