Counteracts the city’s color cast

What the filter blocks out

Streetlights emit light at specific, narrowly defined wavelengths. This glass blocks precisely those wavelengths while allowing the rest of the light to pass through. The result is a night sky that appears dark again, and colors that no longer shift toward yellow-green.

Magnetically attached

You hold the camera in one hand and attach the filter with the other. No threads, no fumbling in the dark. For nighttime shots, where you can’t see what you’re doing anyway, this is even more valuable than during the day.

Covers both lenses

Night shot on the outskirts of town

The difference is most noticeable where the city lights end and the countryside begins. Without the filter, the city’s light dome casts an orange glow over the horizon; with the filter, the sky above remains dark.

Starry sky

Using a tripod and a longer exposure, you can reveal stars in a sky that was previously covered in gray. The contrast between the stars and the background is exactly what city lights would otherwise wash out.

Time-lapse at night

Throughout an entire sequence, the color cast remains constant if you don’t filter it out, and it’s difficult to correct evenly later on. It’s cheaper to correct it at the front of the lens than at the back on the computer.

What You Should Know Before You Order

It’s Less Effective Against LED Streetlights

The filter is designed for the narrow wavelengths of older sodium vapor and mercury vapor lamps. Modern LED lighting emits light across the entire spectrum, and broad-spectrum light cannot be selectively filtered out without also altering the image. In areas where a municipality has already switched to LED lighting, the benefit is significantly smaller. This isn’t a weakness of this particular filter; it applies to all filters of this type.

A filter for night, not for day

During the day, it has no place on the lens—it shifts the colors. Remove it when it gets light out. For exposure control in sunlight, you’ll need an ND filter; that’s a different task.

Fits only the Luna Ultra
