When taking macro photos of insects or flowers, you’re so close to the subject that the clip-on flash casts harsh, spot-like light: hard shadows, highlights on the chitinous exoskeleton, and lost details. This horseshoe-shaped diffuser fits around the front of the lens and over your flash, softly diffusing the light in all directions via two white reflectors. This gives you the even, low-shadow illumination that macro subjects need, without additional studio lighting.

Assembled from six parts

The diffuser comes as a kit: The carbon-fiber parts snap together via a central tab and side snap fasteners to form a semicircular horseshoe shape. Then clip the white reflector into place at the top and the white reflector pocket at the bottom. Assembly takes just one minute, and once assembled, the diffuser retains its shape—it cannot be folded down small. A carrying case is included for transport and storage.

How the soft light is created

The diffuser sits in front of your hot-shoe flash and extends around the front of the lens. The harsh flash light hits the two white reflectors and is redirected onto the subject from above and below. Instead of a harsh, sharp shadow, you get soft, wraparound lighting that reveals fine details.

Because the diffuser sits on the lens and over the flash—and isn’t tied to a specific mount—it works across brands with mirrorless cameras and DSLRs from Canon, Nikon, Sony, and others. What matters is the size of your lens, not the brand.

Insects in the field with a wide-angle macro lens

With a compact wide-angle macro lens, such as a Laowa, you can get up close to the insect while also capturing its habitat. The diffuser softens the flash, preventing the beetle from reflecting light and keeping the surroundings looking natural.

Flowers and details with a mirrorless camera

With a mirrorless camera and a small macro lens of about 30 to 40 mm, you can photograph flowers or mushrooms. The diffused light creates delicate color gradients without overexposing the fine structures with harsh spot lighting.

What You Should Know Before Ordering

Flash and Focus Light Not Included

The package includes the six diffuser parts with a carrying case, but no flash unit or light source. The diffuser shapes the light from your existing clip-on flash; you can find a compatible one in the Clip-on Flash category. For dark subjects, you can also attach a mini focus light, which is available separately in the Macro Light category.

This is the mini size, for short lenses

This version is designed for compact, short macro lenses up to about 40 mm, including wide-angle macro lenses. For a longer macro lens, such as a classic 90mm or 100mm, the mini diffuser is too small; you’ll need a larger version. The key factor is how far your lens protrudes forward. A kit, not a ready-made part

Before using it for the first time, you’ll need to assemble the diffuser from its six parts. This can be done quickly and without tools, but you should be aware of this if you’re expecting a pre-assembled product. Once assembled, it retains its shape and is ready for immediate use.
