When taking macro shots of insects or flowers, you’re so close to the subject that the clip-on flash casts harsh, spot-like light: hard shadows, highlights on the exoskeleton, and lost details. This horseshoe-shaped diffuser fits around the front of the lens and over your flash, softly diffusing the light all around via white reflectors. This gives you the even, low-shadow illumination that macro subjects need, without additional studio lighting.

Snapped together instead of folded

The diffuser comes as a kit: The carbon fiber parts snap together via a central tab and side snap fasteners to form a semicircular horseshoe shape; then you clip in the white reflectors. Assembly takes just one minute without tools, and the diffuser retains its shape—it cannot be folded down small. A carrying case is included for transport and storage.

How the soft light is created

The diffuser sits in front of your hot-shoe flash and extends around the front of the lens. The harsh flash light hits the white reflectors and is redirected onto the subject from above and below. Instead of a harsh, defined shadow, you get soft, wraparound lighting that reveals fine details.

With a compact 60mm macro lens, you can get up close to an insect without scaring it away. The diffuser softens the flash, preventing the beetle from reflecting light and preserving details in its shell and wings.

On flowers, mushrooms, or dewdrops, the diffused light creates delicate color gradients and fine textures without overexposing them with harsh highlight light. Even when shooting against the light, you’ll get clean, well-balanced shots.

What You Should Know Before Ordering

Flash and Focus Light Not Included

The package includes the diffuser parts with a carrying case, but does not include a flash unit or light source. The diffuser shapes the light from your existing clip-on flash; you can find a compatible one in the Clip-on Flash category. For dark subjects, you can also attach a mini focus light, which is available separately in the Macro Light category.

For lenses up to about 60 mm

This size is designed for macro lenses up to about 60 mm. It’s too small for longer macro lenses, such as a 90 mm or 100 mm; for those, you’ll need a larger version. You’ll need to assemble the diffuser from its individual parts before using it for the first time. This can be done quickly and without tools, but you should be aware of this if you’re expecting a pre-assembled product. Once assembled, it retains its shape and is ready for immediate use.
