The lens adapter compensates the difference between the flange focal distance of the camera and the flange focal distance of the lens. This makes it possible to focus without any problems. The focus is adjusted manually on the lens. The Leica M 6-bit lens coding system works with the firmware in the newer camera bodies (from M8) to correct different lenses. The lens coding is called "6-bit coding" because six fields in the bayonet ring are marked black or white and represent a number from 1 to 64 in binary code. The information about the lens helps the camera optimize image quality, and this information is also written to the EXIF image file.

The aperture is set on the lens. Most Leica cameras offer two options for selecting the appropriate shutter speed: In M mode, you can set the shutter speed yourself. This is usually done via a dial on the camera. And if this function is supported, you can also have the shutter speed calculated by your camera's aperture priority. To do this, the camera measures how much light is coming through the lens. And on this basis, it automatically sets the appropriate shutter speed. All you have to do is press the shutter button.
