In macro work the flash sits just a few centimetres from the subject. The result: harsh shadows and blown-out hot spots on every shiny beetle shell. The Godox MCL-D mounts on the front of the MCL-250 macro conversion lens and surrounds your subject with white, translucent diffusion material. The light becomes broader and softer, even with the light source right next to it.

Shiny surfaces without blown-out reflections
Insect shells, water droplets, jewellery or coins mirror every small light source as a glaring dot. Through the diffuser that dot becomes a glowing surface. Reflections turn larger and gentler, and the highlights keep their detail.
Aim the light straight at the subject
Without a diffuser you have to juggle distance and angle at close range to stop the light from getting too harsh. With the MCL-D you simply point your flash or light at the diffusion material. That saves setup time and gives you more even lighting.
Mounted on the lens, not on the flash
The diffuser attaches to the front of the MCL-250 and moves with your lens. Whichever side you flash from, the diffusion material stays where it is needed: around the subject.
What this looks like in practice
A beetle with a glossy shell
You have the MCL-250 on your telephoto zoom and a flash off to the side above the camera. Without a diffuser the shell shows two glaring white dots, with everything below in black. With the MCL-D in front of the lens, the flash hits the white material first and reaches the beetle as a soft surface. The texture of the shell becomes visible and the shadows under the legs lift.
What you should know before ordering
Fits the Godox MCL-250 only
The MCL-D is an accessory for the MCL-250 macro conversion lens and cannot be mounted directly on a camera lens or on another close-up lens. The MCL-250 is not included and has to be ordered separately.
It does not produce light
The diffuser only shapes the light you bring. You need a flash or a macro light. With ambient light alone it does very little.
Diffusion costs some light
Every diffuser absorbs part of the output. Expect to raise flash power a little or bump ISO slightly.
You get very close to the subject
The diffuser extends in front of the lens and surrounds the subject. With skittish insects that takes patience and a slow approach. For subjects that do not run away, it is not an issue.
