The person is in sharp focus, and everything around them fades into a soft haze. People usually create this transition during post-processing, using masks and a lot of patience, and you can usually tell when it’s been done. This filter does it right as you take the photo: one half of the image remains clear, while the other is covered in a soft veil of mist. The transition passes through the same lens as the subject and therefore looks like natural light rather than an artificial effect.

  • One half of the image is clear, the other is shrouded in a soft haze
  • A soft transition instead of a hard edge between the two halves
  • The effect is created during exposure; no masking required
  • 82mm filter thread; can also be used on smaller lenses with a step-up ring
  • Carrying case and cleaning cloth included

Haze on one side, clarity on the other

The effect remains localized

A standard soft-focus filter is applied to the entire image and reduces contrast everywhere, even where you need sharpness. Here, one half remains untouched. The face retains its definition, while the background or foreground on the other side fades into a haze. So you get the soft look without sacrificing the center of the image.

You align the dividing line

You determine where the separation occurs in the image by adjusting the filter’s position. Horizontally, the haze covers the upper or lower half of the image; vertically, it covers the left or right half; any diagonal position falls in between. This alignment is the real work involved with the filter: it determines what remains clear and what becomes blurred.

One filter, all lenses

The filter has an 82mm thread, the largest standard diameter. You can attach lenses with smaller threads using a step-up ring, allowing the same filter to work with all your gear. It’s important to use a threaded ring; magnetic adapter rings cannot hold a screw-in filter.

Here’s what it looks like in everyday use

Portrait with a distracting background

Behind the person is a fence, a parked car—something that’s distracting. Rotate the filter so that the haze half covers the distraction, and it loses contrast and sharp edges without softening the face. This is the exact situation the filter is designed for.

Video with a view out the window

Indoor shot, with the sun blazing outside. Place the haze filter over the window area, and the highlights there will blend softly instead of blowing out harshly. With video, this helps twice as much because you can’t recreate the effect frame by frame later.

What You Should Know Before Ordering

No Front Thread

There is no thread on the front of the filter. This means: Your lens cap won’t fit on it anymore, you can’t screw a second filter in front of it, and a threaded lens hood won’t work either. To transport it, remove the filter and place it in the included pouch. If you want to leave the filter on the lens permanently, you won’t be happy with it.

It’s not a true split diopter

The name is misleading. A classic split diopter is a half close-up lens that shifts the focus to a short distance on one half of the image, so that both the foreground and background are in focus at the same time. This filter does not do that. It blurs one half of the image but does not change the plane of focus. If you need two sharp planes in a single image, this is the wrong product.

The transition depends on the aperture

At a wide aperture, the blur transitions smoothly into the sharp area, and you can barely see the separation. The more you stop down, the more distinct the boundary becomes in the image; at f/11 and above, it becomes visible. So plan to shoot with a wide-open to medium aperture, and when taking photos, look at the image itself rather than just through the viewfinder. The effect cannot be removed in post-processing, and taking an additional shot without the filter costs nothing.
